The Transylvanian Basin Collection is unique in Romania because it features a fossil inventory that illustrates the geological evolution of the Transylvanian Basin over several million years, dating back to the Jurassic period (approximately 190 million years ago). The collection comprises fossils from Cretaceous deposits located on the northwestern edge of the Transylvanian Basin, as well as invertebrates, vertebrates, and fossil plants from the Cenozoic deposits within the Transylvanian Basin. Of particular note is the collection of Cretaceous reptiles from Hațeg, which includes fossil remains of dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs, crocodiles, and turtles that lived 70 million years ago in the Hațeg Basin. The old collections, which formed the basis of these academic collections, are also of great scientific and historical importance. These include the F. Herbich Collection, featuring ammonites from the Jurassic period of the Eastern Carpathians (specifically, the Perșani Mountains and Bucegi Mountains), and the A. Koch Collection, with Tertiary and Quaternary fauna from Transylvania.
