Opened in 2001, the Vivarium of the Babeş-Bolyai University exhibits a permanent collection of live animals hosted and cared for in similar conditions as those of their natural environment. Temporary exhibitions on various themes can be visited as well.
The main function of the Vivarium is of didactic kind; the permanent collection is directly and continuously adapting to the didactic necessities of the students, thus representing the practical part of the teaching act.
By organizing and participating in different events requiring implication at community level, by organizing temporary exhibitions and workshops on interesting subjects, and through the interactive visiting manner, the BBU Vivarium plays also an important part in public education, especially for educating the young public in order to be able to understand and protect nature.
In addition, the Vivarium offers voluntary specialty (veterinarian) assistance for sick and hurt reptile and bird species.
In the permanent collection of the Vivarium, there are 60 species of reptiles, amphibians, fish, and arthropods.
Visitors can observe the species in their natural environment. Also, under controlled circumstances and when the situation allows, visitors can interact with animals and observe different types of behavior (feeding, reproduction, defense) in the presence of the staff.
