About Ottó Herman

Ottó Herman (1835–1914) was a naturalist, zoologist, and ethnographer. Between 1864 and 1871, as an employee of the Zoological Museum in Cluj, he began to study spiders, birds, and fish. Through his remarkable work, he made a decisive contribution to the enrichment of the museum’s collections.

About the collection

The collection of grasshoppers and crickets takes up four insect boxes. It contains 626 specimens of 77 species, most of which were collected in the Transylvanian Plain, along the Niraj River, and in the Eastern Carpathians, between 1864 and 1871. Besides being a curiosity in the history of science, the collection also has scientific value. In addition to those mentioned above, it contains specimens of several species new to Romania’s fauna. Ottó Herman almost doubled the number of known species. In his time, this collection included the largest number of species known in Transylvania.
